Prior to the incorporation of the Hong Kong Dietitians Association Limited on 18 May 2001, the major representation of the dietetic profession in Hong Kong was the trade union formerly known as "Hong Kong Dietitians Association", now "Hong Kong Practising Dietitians Union".

The Union was established in 1985 and has long been playing a key and successful role in uniting the dietetic profession over issues of industrial relations. Being the only organization formed exclusively by practicing dietitians, the Union has essentially assumed the professional role in advancing the learning and knowledge of dietitians and in promoting nutrition health to the general public of Hong Kong.  It has also taken the role to initiate the lobbying of the Government for local statutory registration for dietitians.  By late 1990s, "Hong Kong Dietitians Association" was well recognized as leading adviser of food and nutrition related issues in local society.

In 2001, foreseeing the trends in professional development of continuing education and accreditation system for dietitians, the Union advised the dietetic profession the need to set up a unique professional body for dietitians in Hong Kong, and at resolutions of general meetings, the Union decided to rename as "Hong Kong Practising Dietitians Union" to reflect its future focus on labour relations and occupational health and wellness for its dietitian members.

The new professional group named "Hong Kong Dietitians Association Limited" was incorporated on 18 May 2001. Having acceded to the reputation and good will of  "Hong Kong Dietitians Association", the "Hong Kong Dietitians Association Limited" will succeed in future challenges and commitment to the society of Hong Kong.
